Dilapidated Vehicles
Office of the Aldermen
The new Land Use Bylaw 1P2007 came into effect on 2008 June 01. This bylaw provided a definition of what a Dilapidated Vehicle was, but did not change the rules regarding such vehicle. The bylaw states:
“dilapidated vehicle” means a vehicle that is:
(a) incapable of being safely operated;
(b) partially or fully dismantled; or
(c) substantially damaged.
(3) A dilapidated vehicle must not be located outside of a building.
Between 2008 June 01 and 2008 Sep 15 there were 347 complaints of dilapidated vehicles in the city compared with 119 complaints for the same time period in 2007. In the first six months of 2008 there was a total of 202 complaints lodged. The number of complaints jumped due in large part from the media attention the new bylaw was given and this section of the specifically.
In Ward 9, a total of 49 complaints were filed since the new bylaw came into effect. Of these, 8 files were closed as the vehicles being complained about were found not to be dilapidated. A total of 16 dilapidated vehicles were removed at the request of this office and six of the files were duplicate files (more than one file on the same address). The rest of the files are open and active at various stages of investigation.
